We spent 4 years naming the dog we were never going to get. The kids went through a plethera of ideas from Chewbacka to George Washington. I am allergic and didn’t want a dog, the fur, the extra work. My brother in law, Tully, has a labradoodle, Dutch, who is super chill, hypoallergenic, and cuddly. We fell in love with his puppy at a holiday visit and decided to get a designer dog. Now I spoil him rotten, as do the kids. I love this character! There is so much joy in having a dog. Scientists recently found out why we love them so much. Oxytocin is released when you look into your furry friend’s eyes. That’s the bonding hormone and the same hormone that is released when we look at our own human babies. Soooo, if you want to show the love back to your best friend, here are some unique ideas.
1. Home made treats – WHOOFie Pies
1 mashed banana
1/3 cup smooth peanut butter* (low sodium is a healthier choice for pets)
2 tsp honey
1 ½ cup whole wheat flour
8 oz cream cheese + 1 TBS honey for filling and piping
Preheat oven to 300. Lightly beat the egg then mix in the peanut butter, mashed banana and honey. Blend thoroughly. Add the flour a little at a time, until mixture is evenly combined. Bake 15 minutes. Cool. Blend cream cheese and honey in mixer. Layer cream cheese on bottom of a “bone.” Add a “bone” top. Put cream cheese in a plastic bag and cut a small hole in corner. Pipe the outline of the bone. Viola!
